Tinted

2021-2022

Art direction and branding for a photography company driving representation for black and ethnic image creators.

Tinted wanted branding that reflected their inclusivity and playfulness. The combination of two typefaces, RANDOM and Inter, were chosen to represent the diversity which is at the core of the brand, and to position Tinted as a bold and energetic force.

‘Can The Female Gaze Empower?’ was a Tinted talk hosted by Ronan Mckenzie, featuring a panel of some of the most exciting photographers of today- Harley Weir, Elizabeth Okoh, Yushi Li and Jameela Elfaki. This virtual event discussed new forms of female empowerment that stray away from the normative gaze of the patriarchy. The poster and banner designs play on ocular imagery to symbolise the female gaze alongside a bespoke typographic monogram created for each speaker. These each represent and distil the characteristics of the artist’s practice into form and shape, and a monogram, traditionally a symbol of status, further compounds the narrative of female empowerment.

‘Across the Road’ was another poster designed and art directed to promote a Tinted workshop. The event  brought together photographers of colour, whilst shedding light on social inequalities in East London. Gritty cut-out circles stand in contrast to the clean font, alluding to class divide and gentrification, whilst the blurry image manipulation represents the growing societal discontent and unrest as a result of this polarisation. There is also a theme of lenses, viewpoints and looking infused throughout, to illustrate the quote ‘all artists are constantly looking for something and they don’t always know what’.
